Lightning Rod of Controversy


No topic on which Ingersoll spoke attracted greater controversy than religion. A secularist and agnostic, Ingersoll rejected many conventional religious teachings of his time. He was especially critical of doctrine of eternal punishment, which he considered inconceivably unjust.
